Athens, Georgia, also known as the Classic City, is home to The University of Georgia, the Twilight Criterium cycling race, and much, much more. Athens has had a small but thriving swing scene for nearly 20 years, and we are excited to share our unique scene with the world.
- Go Downtown – As a college town, Athens has a thriving downtown full of local restaurants, stores, bars and live music venues. Athens’ music scene was an important part of the early evolution of the alternative rock movement and is the hometown of rock groups R.E.M. and The B-52s. The Georgia Theatre and the 40 Watt Club host up and coming and well known musicians every night.
- Local Food, Local Flavor – If you are an early riser, the Athens Farmers Market occurs every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and always includes live music. Many of our downtown restaurants specialize in serving locally grown food. For those of you who are 21 and older, Creature Comforts Brewing Co. , Terrapin Brewery , and The Southern Brewing Company provide public tours and tastings.
- Naturally Beautiful – Athens is home to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the North Oconee River Greenway, a heritage and nature trail connecting parks throughout Athens. Just north of town, you can hike along four miles of trails at the 225-acre Sandy Creek Nature Center.
- Uniquely Athens – Also make sure to check out the Tree that Owns Itself and the Double-Barreled Cannon, both of which are featured in Ripley’s Believe it or Not!
